Pace House and Vinings Center serve as a focal point for Vinings’ colorful history, telling vibrant stories of Vinings’ founder, Hardy Pace, and of the Chattahoochee River, the railroad, and the Civil War.

Located in the heart of the picturesque village near the Chattahoochee River on what was first Creek and then Cherokee Indian territory, the original Pace House, a 17-room antebellum home, was burned to the ground by Union troops under the command of General William Sherman.

Following the course of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which served as his supply line, Sherman’s forces reached Vinings on July 5, 1864. Large stone steps are all that remain of the original Pace House. The present structure, a three-room frame dwelling, was built from parts of slave cabins by Ruth Carter Vanneman’s great-grandfather, Solomon K. Pace, a son of Hardy Pace, who ran a river ferry for which Paces Ferry Road was named.
